DJ Go! comments:
“I made this mix when I was in my late teens. I was pretty depressed at the time, and I think it shows. I would’ve called it ‘Grey Tape’ if I’d labeled it back then. I was staying with friends in the dorms of a school I had left for what was ostensibly a year-long break. I recognize the Sarah McLachlan as someone else’s tape. The Backstreet Boys were mine, though. Even though I wasn’t happy in general, I loved to get lost in the music. I think ‘Joan’ was the perfect song for this time in my life, even though I did not understand it at all. Now, ten years later, six years of recovery later, I can have compassion for my younger self while seeing how I’d styled myself a martyr. I really appreciate how much better my life is now and how much happier I am.
“Despite my hard-earned happiness, I still enjoy the Smiths.”
